![]() Landgraaf municipality (L) Municipality in the south-eastern part of the province, formed in 1982 when the former municipalities of Nieuwenhagen (with Nieuwenhagerheide), Schaesberg and Ubach over Worms (the name for the combined villages Waubach, Rimburg, Groenstraat, Lauradorp en Abdissenbosch) merged. Since 1986 the various villages are considered neighbourhoods of the town Landgraaf. However, the churches on this page are ranked by former village. |

Abdissenbosch
The St. Bernadette of Abdissenbosch is a small church in a Traditionalist style. It was designed by F.P.J. Peutz and built in 1935. Location: Bernadettelaan

Waubach
The old St. Jozef was built in 1818. It's a small building in simple neo-Classical style. It served as a church until 1877 and then was used for various purposes. Since 1988 it has been a theatre. Location: Kerkberg 6

The current St. Jozef is a cruciform basilica in neo-Gothic style. It's the only church designed by F. van Schoubrouck and was built in 1868-1877. The architect died unexpectedly in 1870, and the church was completed with various changes to the original design, including a much shorter tower. Location: Kerkstraat 31

Lauradorp
Lauradorp was built as a settlement for coalminers of the Laura & Vereeniging coalmine in neighbouring Eygelshoven. The H.Theresia van het Kind Jezus is a big basilica in Traditionalist style, designed by J. Beersma, architect in the service of the coalmine, and was built in 1933. Location: Salesianenstraat 56

Nieuwenhagen
In 1745, when Nieuwenhagen was under protestant rule, a chapel was built just over the border with Ubach, which was on Austrian territory. The location of this chapel, and the chapel itself, is incorrectly referred to as Sjpaans Kentje (local dialect for "Spanish side"). The original chapel was replaced in 1838 by the current church in neo-Classical style, which served as the church O.L. Vrouw Hulp der Christenen of the Nieuwenhagen parish. Nieuwenhagerheide
The H. Hart of Jezus of Nieuwenhagerheide was built in 1919 and was the second church built by architect J. Wielders. The church combines Expressionism with elements of Romanesque. The tower was built in 1924. Location: Hoogstraat 137

Schaesberg
The H.H. Petrus en Paulus of Schaesberg was founded in 1648 but wasn't completed until 1699. It is a rare example of a catholic church built in Classical style in The Netherlands. In 1914 it was extended with a transept and choir in matching style, designed by J. Stuyt. Location: Kerkplein 4 A

Het Eikske is another former miners settlement. Its church, the H. Michaël, was built in 1955-1956 and was designed by J. Fanchamps, who combined modern architecture with a traditional basilican groundplan. Location: De Wendelstraat 16
