Echt-Susteren municipality (L)

Large municipality covering the territories of the former municipalities of Echt and Susteren, which merged in 2003.

Echt

The main church of Echt is the St. Landricus, a gothic hall-church from the 15th century. In 1871-872 P.J.H. Cuypers lenghthened the nave with several traves, an extension for which the tower in Romanesque style was demolished. A new tower in neo-Gothic style was built instead, which itself was badly damaged in World War two and after the war was partly replaced by a new upper part designed by H. Tillmans.

Location: Vrijthof

P.J.H. Cuypers also designed the Carmelite convent, built in 1879-1880 for nuns wo had fled from Germany. Eyecatcher of the mostly simple building is the neo-Gothic chapel.

Location: Bovenstestraat 48

The St. Rochus chapel was founded in 1686 but the current building dates from 1910. The chapel is part of a slightly bigger building, which also contains a small prison.

Location: Aasterbergerweg

The O.L.V. kapel (chapel of Our Lady) dates from the 17th century, probably 1691, and is in simple Classical style.

Location: Bosstraat 33, Schilberg

The H. Pius X is a modern three-aisled hall-church, built in 1958-1959 after a design by J. Zöllner. The church is mostly built of concrete and glass.

Location: Nieuwe Markt 50

Pey

Just outside Echt, and located to its east, is Pey. The O.L. Vrouwe Onbevlekt Ontvangen is a three-aisled cruciform basilica in neo-Gothic style, designed by P.J.H. Cuypers and built in 1856-1861.

Location: Kerkstraat 1

Koningsbosch

The church of Koningsbosch, south-east of Echt, is the O.L. Vrouwe Onbevlekt Ontvangen. It was built in 1925-1926 and was designed by J. Stuyt. The walls are on the outside covered with natural stone.

Location: Prinsenbaan 131

The former convent of the Liefdezusters van het Kostbaar Bloed te Sittard was built in 1873-1874 after a design by J. Kayser, who combined neo-Renaissance and neo-Gothic styles.

Location: Kerkstraat 119

Dieteren

Dieteren is located a bit north-west of Susteren. The St. Stefanus is a church in Traditionalistic style, designed by A.J.N. Boosten and built in 1936-1938.

Location: Kerkstraat

Susteren

The Romanesque St. Amalberga was in the Middle Ages the church of an important convent. It  mostly dates from the 12th century, but the westwork was radically changed during a restoration in 1887-1891, lead by P.J.H. Cuypers.

Location: Salvatorplein 1

When Susteren was expanded towards the east, a new parish church was built. The O.L. Vrouwe Onbevlekt Ontvangen dates from 1917-1918 and was designed by C. Franssen in neo-Romanesque style.

Location: Marialaan

Nieuwstadt

The St. Johannes de Doper, which for the most part dates from the 14th century, is built in a rather strange style that combines elements of Romanesque and Gothic. It is unknown in how far this look is original, because in 1862 P.J.H. Cuypers restored it, without documenting the changes he made and no older pictures of the church being known. In 1927 the tower was added by J. Wielders, who lived in Nieuwstadt.

Location: Millenerstraat 1
